Interactive Simulations for Teaching Physics
Diverging Lenses
Authors: Ms. Giselle dos Santos Castro - Federal University of Ceara - UFC

CONTROLS:
- Click on the object's X (red arrow) and drag to change the size and/or orientation of the object. You can also move it to any position between the left end and the converging lens.
- The converging lens has fixed position and fixed focal length.
- Choose a diverging lens from 4 possibilities. Each diverging lens has a different focal length.
- Click on the center of the diverging lens and drag it to the desired position.
- The simulation only shows the object and the real images obtained with the lens. It does not show virtual images.
DESCRIPTION OF THE SIMULATION:
This simulation allows the determination of the focal length of a diverging lens. The converging lens is present in the simulation to produce a real image that can behave like a virtual object when the diverging lens is positioned between the real image produced by the converging lens and the converging lens; in this situation, the diverging lens will produce a real image of the virtual object shown by the simulation. There are 4 diverging lens options each with a different focal length. The simulation does not allow the visualization of virtual images. The diverging lens can be shifted between the right end and the converging lens; to do this, just click on the center of it and drag it to the desired position.
